Erik Conrad: Palpable City (II)

Introduction:
Erik Conrad has been working really hard on his work Palpable City since he arrived in Prague, some days before the ENTER: DATAPOLIS began in the Czech Capital, which he also presented in a speak during the symposium at the Biennale. And now on the last day of the exhibition (in its full version) he finally can relax a little bit, and have a talk about Palpable City.

You and Palpable City:
There are many examples in the history of art, where artists have involved people in their works. F.ex. in the sixties, where Fluxus-artists invited, or forced their audience to be an active part of the perfomances, during their art-shows they incurred. Or, in the first "socle" made by Piero Manzoni, where you can stand on a small box, and be a living (art) sculpture in front of the guests at the exhibition. Otherwise Fluxus, that most of the time, was a social movement, because they included a lot of people in their performances, Erik Conrad's work Palpable City is more connected to the individuel element that appears in Manzoni's socle, and in the time we're living in today, where many commucationproducts are sold with an "i" name on them.

Erik Conrad explain the concept behind the interface for Palpable City.

Even though you can imagine, and have an idea to what Palpable City is all about by reading the concept on the internet, it is impossible to understand it, unless that you have tried to wear the sensor-motorized jacket on your own body, and have taken a walk in the concrete context, that is also an important part of the project.

Erik Conrad explain the concept behind the patterns and structures in Prague that is used for Palpable City.

Prague and Palpable City:
In the beginning when Erik Conrad should decide in which context in Prague that should be a part of the Palpable City project, he was thinking of shooting the pictures for the project down town Prague, because there are many great buildings, with a lot of patterns on them. But in the end he decided to choose the area around the exhibition place in the Prague suburb Dejvicka. However that causes some problems for him, because "all the houses patterns" more or less look the same, which was a little bit unusual compared with the other cities where he has exhibited Palpable City.

Erik Conrad and the nearby future:
In fall this year Conrad is going to deliver his ph.d-thesis, so he know what he shall do from now on, and the next couple of months.
